Parable of the Garden

This show incorporated cultures unlike the average American lifestyle.  "Paradise" by Muratbek Djoumalicv and Gulnara Kasmalieva was a three-channel installation with a large circle made out of earth and grass.  It is a poetic piece which shows the natural beauty of nature.  The sound and images are relaxing and enjoyable to feel in the gallery space.

Dia: Beacon

My favorite piece at the Dia:Beacon, was Richard Serra's "Union of Torus and the Sphere" made in 2001.  It was made entirely of steel and was placed in a narrow room which created movement when one walked around the piece.  You could feel the swaying of the large structure when passing by the narrow space between the wall and the steel.  His other pieces "Elevational Wedge" (2001) and "Seatter Piece" (1967) were also interesting yet simple looking.  Serra was born in San Francisco in 1939 and is known for his minimalist sculptures. He supported himself in the earlier years by working in steel mills which, obviously, influenced his later work.

Christa Sommerer and Jeffrey Shaw: Virtual Realities

Christa Sommerer and Jeffrey Shaw are two artists who incorporate virtual realities into their digital and electronic artwork. Both have an interest in creating their viewers as participants in the work itself.  Through their interactive digital pieces, the viewers experience a virtual reality that is unlike any other.
