Dia: Beacon

My favorite piece at the Dia:Beacon, was Richard Serra's "Union of Torus and the Sphere" made in 2001.  It was made entirely of steel and was placed in a narrow room which created movement when one walked around the piece.  You could feel the swaying of the large structure when passing by the narrow space between the wall and the steel.  His other pieces "Elevational Wedge" (2001) and "Seatter Piece" (1967) were also interesting yet simple looking.  Serra was born in San Francisco in 1939 and is known for his minimalist sculptures. He supported himself in the earlier years by working in steel mills which, obviously, influenced his later work.
